Abstract
This study presents the identification of the main air pollution sources in the Balearic islands (Spain) from statistical energy consumption values, establishing the appropriate empirical emission factors. Results are compared with measured values obtained from stack isokinetic sampling and laboratory analytical determinations. The emissions from 1986 and 1991 are compared to check the evolving pattern of emissions. The most important conclusions are: (1) the absolute values of emitted pollutants (SO2, NOx, TSP) do not reveal cause for concern and are improving with time as better fuels are used based upon air quality data measured by monitoring stations in Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza, whose results are always below the guide values fixed by the European Union Directives; (2) the major impact is produced in the island of Mallorca, due to the size of its stable and visitor populations, as well as its industrial installations.
