Achalas ia, as a primary eso phagea l motility disorder, is al so characteri zed by increas ing the tone of lower eso phageal sphincte r, absence or incomplete s phincter re laxat ion in response to swallow ing, loss of esophageal peri stal sis and rising intra- esoph ageal pressure.
