Preparation and study the thermal initiation of poly vinyl isopropelidene D-galactose

The synthesis and the homopolymerization of an unsaturated sugar monomer, 1,2:3,4-di-O- isopropylidene-5,6-exo- -D-galactosene (3) is described. Homopolymerization of the vinyl sugar (3) were carried out in toluene solution using dibenzoyl peroxide as initiator at 80 C . The structures and compositions of the prepared compounds were established by 1HNMR and FT-IR spectroscopy . The kinetic of thermal initiation for homopolymerization of vinyl sugar was studied with dibenzoyl peroxide initiator,and the relationship between %conversion of monomer to polymer with heating time indicates that no inhibition or retardation is involved in the free-radical polymerization process . The polymerization process is second order in the monomer.
