    Synthesis of some metal complexes of azo type ligand and evaluation of their antibacterial activity

    Azo derivative compound and its metal (cobalt, nickel, copper and zinc) complexes have been synthesized by the reaction of p-amino benzoic acid and resorcinol in (1:1) mole ratio. The bidentate ligand was react with the metal ions (II) in 2:1 mole ratio via reflux in methanol, using Et3N as a base to give complexes of the general formula [M(H2L)2] where; M=Co+2, Ni+2, Cu+2 and Zn+2. The synthesized compounds were characterized by spectroscopic methods [I.R, U.V.-Vis, A.A and 1H NMR] along with melting point, chloride content, magnetic susceptibility and conductivity measurements. The data of these studies and measurements suggest a square planar geometry around Ni+2 ion and tetrahedral geometry around (Co+2, Cu+2 and Zn+2) ions. The synthesized ligand along with their metal complexes was screened for their in vitro antibacterial activity against four local strains of E-coli as Gram-negative bacteria in addition to two strains of Pseadomanas. Five Gram-positive bacteria utilizing for locally strains of Staphylococcus were tested also using the agar diffusion technique.
