Background & Objective: The aim of this study is to assess results of percutaneous closure of secundumtype atrial septal defect (ASD II) using Amplatzer septal occluders (ASO). Materials & Methods: Between february 2006 and october 2009, we studied 80 patients with secundum ASD in our institution. Defect size was less than or equal to 34 mm and there was clinical evidence of right ventricular volume overload or clinical symptoms. Patients underwent full physical examination, an electrocardiogram, chest x-ray, 2D color Doppler transthorasic echo, transphygeal echo, and cardiac catheterization. Position and size of the defect were confirmed by angiography. If the defect is fit for closure (defect margins are at least 5 mm to the coronary sinus, AV valves, or right upper pulmonary vein), device placement was attempted. Physical examination, and echocardiogram were obtained predischarge (within 24 hours), at 3 months, and at 6 months. Results: 92,5% of defects (74 from total 80 patients) were completely closed immediately after procedure, 96,25% (77 80) after 3 months, and 99,75% (79 80) after 6 months. There was no deaths or serious complications such as device embolization, cardiac perforation, or hemorrhagic pericardial tamponade. Conclusion: Transcatheter closure of secundum ASD using the ASO is safe and effective in equipped centers and experienced hands.
