The present paper discusses three aspects of teaching Translation at
university level: (1) planning, (2) the execution of the teaching, and (3)
evaluation of translation programme. After a brief presentation of the
rationale and prospects for teaching translation in the present situation,
the paper provides a thorough illustration of the theoretical and practical
teaching of different components of the program. The complexity of
teaching translation as a dynamic act of interpretation, is seen in the
difficulty of synchronizing the appropriate teacher, the suitable material
and the viable teaching method. In the third section, the performance of
65 students in Arabic-English and English-Arabic translation
examination is discussed in relation to their performance in five courses
from two language skills, reading and writing. Finally, the paper
recommends the use of translation as a means for teaching language, and
calls for more research into the relationship between language skills and
translation practice, male/female language aptitude and more planning for
preparing future translators and translation teachers.
The present paper aims at; (1) describing the planning for teaching
translation at King Faisal University, (2) demonstrating the execution of
the programme, and (3) evaluating students' performance in language and
transaltion courses.
