The main concern of this research paper will be to present a contextualised account of Charles Allston Collins’sliterary and artistic career of which few scholars have previously taken note. The research paper therefore establishes the limits of and evaluates a remarkable canon that has not been the subject of any major study, pinpointing its strengths and weaknesses and using them to explore aspects of mid- Victorian print culture and the concept of authorship, which have been recognised as significant but expressed in a particularly acute form in Collins’s case. It demonstrates how central Charles Allston Collins wasto the famous Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and to the almost equally famous circle of Charles Dickens and the ‘young men’, whom he mentored in journalism and fiction.The paper also argues that he took on a specific cultural and aesthetic stance distinguishable from each group.
