أحكام الرقية و ضوابطها في الشريعة الاسلامية

The study in question discusses a matter of great importance, al-ruqya (spiritual incantations) or the Quranic recitation over a patient. It is chiefly concerned with the Prophet Muhammad's sayings and supplications, and Quranic views on the practices of al-ruqya. The importance of this topic arises from the fact that sorcery and the magic arts have became common this day and age; hence, people are able to find clinics treating patients with Quranic and Islamic supplications for medication and view them as a way to protect themselves from evil. Nonetheless, invented heresies, ill practices and erroneous deeds have become rampant even in these clinics often due to the misunderstanding of al-ruqya and its guiding principles. Herein lies the importance of this study which consists of the following six sections: 1) A discussion on the meaning of the Arabic term al-ruqya' and its governing principles in Islam; 2) Divisions among practitioners pertaining to this term; 3) Cures and treatment concerning envy (the evil eye), magic, and epilepsy; 4) Amulets, known in Arabic as tama'im, which are hung around someone's body or worn or carried by a person as a cure; 5) A discussion on the Islamic principles concerning the payment of wages in return for al-ruqya; and 6) A discussion on the rules and principles of al ruqya. The researcher concludes the study by making recommendations about the role that states should play in monitoring 'Quranic clinics' and codifying al ruqya practices so that services offered are free from exploitation and that both practitioners and patients are fully informed.
