The use of membrane technology in water softening is a promising approach to alleviate the global water crisis. Hollow fiber membrane process has become increasingly attractive due to their unique characteristics to selectively remove specific compounds or ions. In this study, microporous hollow fiber membranes were fabricated using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) as the material of the hollow fibers. It was possible to achieve NaCl and CaCl2 rejection of (19.7-24.3)% and (30.8-33.4)%, respectively, when tested for 1000 ppm feed solutions at 1 bar operating pressure. The use of these hollow fiber membranes in water softening applications is discussed.
