The growth of web-based resources has changed language learning and teaching dramatically. Despite the widespread use of web-based resources, there are many language learners who are reluctant to use them for learning communication skills and specialized English language knowledge. However, the positive attitudes toward web-based instruction (WBI) can be influential in implementing WBI. The goal of this study was to explore English language learners attitudes toward learning the English language through web-based instruction in engineering careers in the Iranian context. The participants were 300 engineers from different companies in Tehran and Qazvin. An 82-item questionnaire was used in this study. Also, semi-structured interviews were used to gain more in-depth information about the attitudes of the language learners towards web-based instruction. The results revealed that the Iranian engineers generally held positive attitudes toward learning English through WBI in engineering careers. Furthermore, results of descriptive statistics showed that participants have totally positive attitudes towards effectiveness and satisfaction. The majority of participants met the optimal level of web-based skills for developing their ESP knowledge in engineering careers. However, the results showed that there are some limitations of using the Web for language learning purpose in Iran. The findings may have implications for developing discipline-based ESP methodology.
