Hydraulics can significantly affect bit performance in applications where cuttings volume, formation types, and rig pressure limitations lead to poor fluid dynamics that compromise cleaning and cooling, and result in down-hole bit balling that negatively affects penetration rates and higher bit wear. A key mitigation challenge is improving cleaning efficiency without experiencing a significant pressure drop across the bit. To improve the hydraulics, the fluid flow pattern across the drill bit should be optimized for low pressure drop, low recirculation flow and high velocity. This research including computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations which were done in some articles and then reviewing their validation by some related experimental tests for better understand flow and velocity across the bit.
