One of the important effects of employing distributed generations (DG) on distribution networks is the improvement of the network reliability. Determination of optimal location and size of distributed generations is one of the major problems of distribution utilities. In this paper, the problem of the optimal DG allocation and sizing in distribution systems for reliability improvement is solved. Besides, the impacts of DG on system operating characteristics such as purchased energy cost from the electricity market, electric losses and voltage profile are investigated. Also the effect of load models is considered in the optimal DG allocation. A method based on Improved Particle Swarm Optimization (IPSO) and Monte Carlo simulation is used for solving the problem. Key advantages of IPSO are the ability to escape from local maxima, easy implement and fast convergence. This study is applied to the practical 33-bus distribution system. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
