Pragmatic Features of Pronouns In Hills like White Elephants

Hemingway as a writer who has been considered a master of dialog tries to transmit emotion and deep meaning through conversation in most of his works. His suggestive rather than direct style makes his works valuable for readers to meditate and investigate more on his works. This paper investigates the use of pronouns to show the moral of the Hills like white elephants by Hemingway. By a stylistic analysis of a story we can reconsider how to read a story and realize the aim of the author in each sentence. There are varieties of researches about the use of pronouns in stories but none of them has investigated a short story in pragmatic way. There is no similar research as this research, so this is a subjective essay with some extra general information through internet. This unique study has got the quantity of pronouns used in the story and with this aid, it tries to analyze the emotion of the story, the personality of characters, the state between them and even more, qualitatively. This study aims to reveal the fact that the male character is trying to push the girl to do “operation” and violate the law of abortion which was illegal at the time when this story was written, through the pronouns they use while having a distasteful conversation. It also clearly shows how the female character is willing to keep the baby and the relationship with the male character. Also this investigation will reveal how the writer is trying to control the feeling of the reader by having a third-person point of view and including more pronouns in this way.
