The catalyst Johnson Matthey Katalco 57-4 is a commercial catalyst extrudate used for methane or natural gas steam reforming. In its unreduced form it is constituted by 18 % NiO supported on Calcium aluminate. It is reported to have a surface area of 12 m2/g [1,2,3]. The catalyst Johnson Matthey Katalco 25-4 is also a commercial catalyst extrudate used for propane and butane –containing natural gas steam reforming, or for prereforming of it. It has a similar composition but with additional 1.8 % K2O. In fact, the addition of potassium prevents carbon formation, which is thermodynamically and kinetically more favoured with heavier hydrocarbons [3]. The behavior of these two catalysts has been compared with that of the home-made catalyst denoted as 39NiS800, constituted by 33.3% NiO/3.3%SiO2/66.3%Al2O3, in the steam reforming of methane, propane and ethanol.
