Nowadays one of the most important problems in the industry is wastewater treatment. Industrial wastewaters
contain organic matter, heavy metals and many toxic materials causing serious environmental problem. In recent years
reed beds and constructed wetlands have been used to treat domestic and industrial wastewaters. They are more costeffective
than other wastewater treatment technologies. Furthermore, reed beds with vertical flow have proved good
capability to nitrify ammonium compounds because of greater ability for oxygen transfer. The purpose of this paper is
to investigate the performance of optimized vertical-flow reed beds in enhanced removal of ammonium and organic
matter from industrial wastewater. By using vertical-flow reed beds with effluent recirculation in this study, the
ammonium ( +
4 NH ) removal was 97.77%, the COD removal 90% and BOD5 removal 91.25%, concerning their influent
concentration.
