The paper is devoted to the investigation of discrete version of gamma distribution based on the balanced discretization method. The new distribution demonstrates several prominent properties, which can handle all kinds of dispersion in real data. A new INAR(1) model based on the balanced discrete gamma innovations is introduced and applicability of the process is checked via a COVID-19 real data set.
