Commognitive is a central concept of teaching and learning that is based on the assumption that thinking can be conceptually useful as one s communication with oneself. In this article, Sfard s theory of Commognition is first introduced. Commognition is the combination of communication and cognition. The main characteristics of commognition and their types are defined to build a tool. Commognition theory is one of the new theories of teaching and learning in mathematics education. The concept of the derivative is an important subject in calculus and the students have misconceptions in learning. In this study, our main focus is on learning and teaching the concept of the derivative (special tangent line). This theory could be a new lens for teaching and learning the derivative for researchers.
