Over the past few decades, Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have become a unique type of porous material with effective structural and surface properties, attracting attention in various applications such as sensors, gas separation, catalysis, and energy storage devices due to their remarkable conductive properties. This study aims to assess the naturally porous structure of MOFs and how they facilitate electron and ion transport in Li-ion batteries. The review mainly focuses on their implementation as efficient anode and cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). The purpose of this review is to examine the advancements in using MOFs as either anode or cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries. By doing so, it will offer guidance on how to optimize the reaction conditions to create a MOF structure that is suitable for electrochemical energy storage applications and the battery community.
