Role of Cerium nitrate on the corrosion resistance of alkyd coating

Durability of alkyd resin is low in exterior surfaces. We try to enhance alkyd properties as one layer coating, cerium nitrate dispersed in alkyd resin to achieved better properties against corrosive circumstances. The influence of different percent of cerium ion (0% up to 5%) on corrosion performance was studied. Coated plates were immersed in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution and corrosion resistance of coating was measured by EIS method, it shows that alkyd coated plate with 4% cerium ion has the best corrosion resistance. Coating adhesion to steel was investigated by pull off that reveals the coating with 4% of cerium ion has the best adhesion, which proves the EIS results. UV-spectroscopy has been used to detect cerium ion aggregation.
