Presented herein is a molecular dynamics (MD) study on the mechanical oscillatory behavior
of a chloride ion tunneling through electrically charged carbon nanotubes (CNTs). It is assumed
that the electric charges with similar sign and magnitude are uniformly distributed on
the two ends of nanotube. The interatomic interactions between carbon atoms and van der
Waals (vdW) interactions between ion and nanotube are modeled by Tersoff-Brenner and
Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential functions, respectively, while the electrostatic interactions between
ion and electric charges are modeled by Coulomb potential function. Selected numerical
results are presented to investigate the effects of sign and magnitude of electric charges
on the operating frequency of chloride ion-charged CNT oscillators. It is found out that,
higher oscillation frequencies are generated for higher magnitudes of electric charges distributed
on the CNT. Also, it is shown that, the frequency of chloride ion inside negatively
charged CNTs is lower than that inside positively charged ones for the same magnitude of
electric charges of outer shell, while it is higher than that inside uncharged CNTs.
