The protective effect of calcium on aluminum toxicity in Oreochromis niloticus tissues

Abstract
In our study, the protective effect of calcium on the accumulation of aluminum in muscle, liver, gill and kidney of Oreochromis niloticus were investigated. The fish were exposed to 0.1 mg lt-1 Al, 0.1 mg lt-1 Al+0.1 mg lt-1 Ca, 0.1 mg lt-1 Al+1.0 mg lt-1 Ca and 1.0 mg lt-1 Al, 1.0 mg lt-1 Al+1.0 mg lt-1 Ca and 1.0 mg lt-1 Al+10.0 mg lt-1 Ca mixtures for 7, 14 and 21 days. Aluminum accumulations in tissues were measured by ICP-MS. Aluminum accumulation exposure tissues highest accumulation occurred in the kidney followed by gill, liver and muscle. In all exposure period, accumulation of aluminum in whole tissues of O. niloticus decreased in the presence of calcium. In both mixed exposure (Al+Ca) concentrations, significantly reduced the accumulation of aluminum in the kidney, gill and liver of O. niloticus.
