Abstract
Composite materials, one of them is metal matrix composites (MMCs), is a group of engineering materialswhoseapplication fieldsexpandrapidly. In this study, tomake an interpretation on machinability of MMCsmaterials, MMCsmaterialsreinforced Al matrixandMgOwhichwereproduced in 5%, 10% and 15% reinforcement-volumeratios (R-V) weresubjectedtomachiningtestsbycarbide (C) andcoatedcarbide (CC) cuttingtools. Machiningtestswereconductedwith 300 m/dakcuttingspeed, at threedifferentfeedrates (0.075, 0.15 and 0.225 mm/dev) andfixeddepth of cut (1 mm). Afterthemachiningtests, wearcharacteristicswereexaminedbythehelp of scanningelectronmicroscope (SEM) views of cuttingtoolsandthefindingswerediscussed. Intheevaluation of SEM viewsof cuttingtools, thebuiltupedge(BUE) wasobserved at thehead of allcuttingtools. As not beingwithinthetool life bound, it is deducedthatwiththeincrease in feed rate, a trace of flankwearmechanism on C cuttingtoolsweredetected. Generally it is deducedthatwhile CC toolsrevealbetterperformance, withregardtotoolcosts, C toolscould be usedtooperatethiskind of MMCsmaterials.
