  • Abstract
In this study, the performance of various coated cutting tools were investigated experimentally in milling of AISI 304 stainless steel. Five cementit carbide inserts with various coating such as monolayer TiCN, AlTiN, TiAlN and two layers TiCN + TiN and AlTiN + TiN were selected in the tests and these tools were evaluated by tool wear, cutting forces and surface roughness. TiCN + TiN coated cutting inserts gave the lowest flank wear and surface roughness values. The highest tool wear and surface roughness values were obtained with AlTiN coated cutting inserts. The lowest Fx and Fy forces were measured with TiAlN coated cutting inserts. Adhesion and coating delamination on the cutting inserts were observed with EDX analysis. AlTiN coated inserts showed the worst performance during milling of AISI 304 stainless steel.
