  • Abstract
This study examines elementary teacher competencies and inservice training needs in using alternative measurement and assessment tools. Participants included 337 elementary teachers working at schools located in central Kırıkkale. The findings showed that while teachers felt most competent in using the alternative assessment tools of observation, performance tasks, self assessment and presentations, they felt least competent in using structured grids, diagnostic trees, rubrics and attitude scales. While competency levels in using alternative assessment tools varied meaningfully with respect to the stage of school they were working at and their seniority, no such difference was found with respect to gender. Teachers stated that they needed inservice training with the alternative assessment tools of diagnostic trees, structured grids and rubrics.
