  • Abstract
Gemcitabine replaces one of the nucleic acids such as cytidine as a nucleoside analog during DNA replication. The process arrests tumor growth resulting in apoptosis. As a chemotherapeutic agent, gemcitabine has systemic effect on every tumor cells. So, it is used in various carcinomas: non-small cell lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, bladder cancer and breast cancer. Here, multiple myeloma-RPMI-8226 and Ig G plasma cell leukemia- ARH 77 cell lines were treated with gemcitabine in different concentrations. Cytotoxic effect of gemcitabine was detected by XTT assay in cell culture. In RPMI-8226 cell line, lethal effect was detected at the concentration of 400 μmol/L. In ARH-77 cell line, lethal effect was found at the concentration of 200 μmol/L. These results represent us the cytotoxic affect of gemcitabine on multiple myeloma and Ig G plasma cell leukemia tumor cells. It is needed to do further experiments for finding efficiency of multiple myeloma and plasma cell leukemia treatment with gemcitabine.
