Misperception of alevism: In reference to the muharram month activities

This study discusses how Alevism is perceived in reference to the Muharram Month Activities carried out in Turkey. The subject is handled by means of fasting (of Muharram),mourning and ashure (Noah s pudding dessert) activities carried out in the Muharram Month. When an assessment is made considering the activities about the subjects,it is observed that there are two main misperceptions and incorrect positionings related to groups called as Alewi in our country. First of these is the perception of these activities as if they only belong to Alewi groups and disregarding activities executed with the same content in other Sufism approaches/sufi orders. Second is accepting Alewism within the frame of the Shi ism/Ja farism. It is considered that these two fundamental misperceptions and wrong positionings are due to incorrect assessments that ignore the data revealed by the historical and scientific knowledge.
