The Investigation of Time Headways at Signalized Arterials

Abstract
In a traffic flow, time headway distributions between vehicles is important for the traffic engineering applications. Headways are used for the determination of simulation processes, signalized intersection organization and capacity estimation of unsignalized intersections and traffic safety analysis. In this study, observations are made at six different points on important arterials in İzmir and distribution of headways at observation points are evaluated depending on the vehicle and the lane types individually. According to obtained results, it is tried to determine the best distribution which defines headways on the signalized arterials. Exponential distribition is found more successful in representing the observed headways than lognormal distribution from examined simple distributions. Cowan M3 distribution which is a complex distribution, is found to be applicable to data sets.
