Abstract
Emdogain (EMD) is an enamel matrix derivate and is used clinically for the regeneration of tissues supporting the tooth. EMD provides surface detoxification, demineralization and release of collagen fibers and prepares a biocompatible surface. EMD reinforces the alkaline phosphatase activity and increases release of bone matrix proteins from osteoblasts. Amelogenins, by effecting mesenchymal cells, stimulate the release of factors essential for healing, growth and regeneration. Amelogenin–containing Emdogain can be used in endodontology, periodontology, implantology or traumatology for vital pulp therapy or bone or wound healing purposes; and these applications have been found to be useful alternatives in tissue regeneration.
