  • Abstract
In this study, the anatomical properties of three Origanum vulgare L.(Lamiaceae) subspecies (O. vulgare L. subsp. hirtum (Link.) Ietswaart, O. vulgare L. subsp. viride (Boiss.) Hayek, O. vulgare L. subsp. vulgare Ietswaart) were investigated comparatively. Sections of roots, stems and leaves were photographed, and then evaluated. Rhisodermis were in outermost part of roots with different thickness. Although the thickness of O. vulgare L. subsp. vulgare is thin and has parenchymatic pith; the central cylinder of O. vulgare L. subsp. hirtum and O. vulgare L. subsp. viride are lignified completely. Collateral vascular bundles are found in both stems and roots. Stems are four cornered. Unilayer epidermis, 3-5 layered collechymatous tissues at the corners, cortex, 1-2 layered endodermis, phloem, cambium, xylems at the corners, pith rays and parenchymatic pith cells with starch are located from outer to inner. This part was completely covered by xylem elements. The leaves are different thickness, amphystomatic and have mesomorf type stomata. The stomata in abaxial surfaces are more than in adaxial surfaces. The thickness of the leaf blade shows difference for three subspecies. The leaves bear peltate glandular trichomes on the epidermis.
