    Determining The Thoughts of The Maternity Ward Inpatients Towards Male Nurses

  • Abstract
    Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the thoughts of the inpatients in maternity wards towards the male nurses. Method: The descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted in Obstetrics and Gynecology services of Ataturk University Aziziye Research Hospital. Women who had been hospitalized at above departments between 1 November to 30 December 2010 constituted the population group of the study. No sampling method was used; totally 530 women that accepted to participate in the study were included in the study. Data were collected through a questionnaire prepared by the researchers. Mean, standard deviation, number, percentage distributions and chi-square tests were used to evaluate data. Results: Average age of the female participants was 35.33±11.84 and 40.4% of them were primary school graduates. 25.3% of the patients were never hospitalized previously and 71.9% have never received nursing care from a male nurse. It was determined that majority of women had negative thoughts about the male nurses and that they preferred to receive nursing care from female nurses. Conclusion: It was also identified that the women with a low level of education, who have never received nursing care from a male nurse previously, had more negative thoughts towards the male nurses and thought that they would be uncomfortable receiving care from the male nurses.
