    Uremic Pruritus and Nursing Care

  • Abstract
    Uremic pruritus is a common complication of hemodialysis. A number of different mechanisms have been proposed to explain the origin of uremic pruritus, but none are completely convincing. Xerosis (dry skin), peripheral neuropathy, divalent ions such as calcium, phosphate and magnesium, parathyroid hormone, histamine, opioids, skin mast cells, vitamin A, uremic toxins, allergic reactions and sensitization related dialysis, and immune system derangement have been reported to date. The management of uremic pruritus for nurses have important responsibilities. Nurses not implement timely and effective intervention in chronic itching for uremic pruritus, the patient s physical, social and mental functions of its effects on quality of life will be reduced, disruption in skin integrity and infection risk will arise. This review gives information the uremic itching in hemodialysis patients and nursing care.
