Saintliness and the Trilogy of “Dağın Öte Yüzü”

Abstract
“Dağın Öte Yüzü” is the main title for the sequence of Yaşar Kemal’s three novels. In this trilogy one of the main issues is saintliness which is an important part of folk culture. This study aims to discuss this issue based on these three novels. Firstly common knowledge about being a saint is given. Then this figure is discussed within the frame of the novels. Afterwards the process for the character “Taşbaşoğlu” of being declared as a saint by the villagers is explained. Also it is cleared why he has been accepted as a saint and treated that way, how he has got that status step by step and finally how that title has been taken from him. After this analysis concluded thoughts about saintliness in the novels are depicted.
