THE BRIGANDAGE AND REBELLION MOVEMENTS IN BAGHDAD PROVINCE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE XVI TH CENTURY

After the expedition named Irakeyn of the Suleiman the First Baghdad Province was established on the lands was seized. Baghdad province, as it is important for the Ottomans, was also has a great importance for the Safavids. Therefore, the Safavids, were in a desire to get back Baghdad and the surrounding lands they lost to the Ottoman as soon as possible. Safavid in order to realize these aspirations, they tried to benefit from the people called Kızılbaş in Baghdad province who had the same sectarian with them. The primary objective of this collaboration was to undermine the Ottoman authority in Baghdad. They also used brigandage as a method to achieve their objective. Hiding their identities, the Kızılbaş officials leaked in to administrative and military services and tried to disrupt public order whenever they had chance and persecuted the people in the province. Another reason of brigandage and rebellion in Baghdad province was a quite dense presence of tribes in the province. Because of they giving priority to the interests of the tribes, although the tribal lords look loyal to the state, sometimes the rebelled and contributed in brigandage activities when the authority of the state becomes weak in the province. Sometimes they could aboutface and could collaborate with Safavids. Because of these rebellion and brigandage events occurred in the second half of the XVIth century stability never could ensured completely in Baghdad Province.
