  • Abstract
This study investigated how pre-service elementary mathematics teachers used constructing tools (calculator and geometric drawing tools) in solving problems and how they did reasoning based on existing relationships while performing the construction. In this sense, the overall aim of this study was to examine the impact of an instructional process supported by the use of TI-Nspire CAS on pre-service teachers’ performance during constructions and their reasoning based on the geometric relationships existing in the desired constructions. The study also dealt with the effect of this instructional process on the strategies used by the preservice teachers. Using qualitative research methods, this study enrolled a total of 77 freshman elementary preservice teachers. The research data were collected through pre-test and post-test, each of which consisted of three open-ended questions and analyzed qualitatively. The pre-test and post-test results showed that the students achieved a progress in the reasoning skills and strategies they used in solving geometric construction problems and that an instructional process supported with TI-Nspire CAS had an impact in the geometric constructions performed with paper-pencil medium.
