To become an information society and, to utilize the opportunities provided by the information and telecommunication technology in economic development, an efficient working telecommunication sector is needed in today’s world. Since the market structure of telecommunication sectors in most countries is oligopolies and even monopolist, efficiencies of the sector could be analyzed by using the data set consisting of different countries. Based on this conjecture, we compare the Turkish telecommunication firms with the OECD countries’ telecommunication firms operating in fixed and mobile lines. We use a panel data set running from 1999 to 2005, which is obtained from various OECD communication outlooks. In the study, our goals are to comparatively evaluate the current structure of the sector and to measure the relative efficiency of the representative Turkish firms.
