  • Abstract
As a result of the development of movable type with the Industrial Revolution, typography has achieved a more orderly system than handwriting. As this new method has made possible to make many more copies in a shorter amount of time, texts were able to reach a wider audience. The attempts to push the rules of typography, which had begun with poets and writers, has reached its peak with the avant-garde art movements aiming to create the words and the images of the new mechanized world. The goal of this study is to analyze avant-garde art movements with regard to their use of typography, as these movements shaped how the new world perceives design and typography. Therefore, only the movements that have a relation to typography are analyzed. The research is carried out by means of scanning relevant literature, and by analyzing resources and examples concerning graphic design and typography. The research emphasizes that, though modern typography is based on avant-garde art movements, there has also been experimental approaches that predate these movements. We ve investigated why these efforts weren t as successful as avant-garde art movements. It was also determined that, through the systems used and spread by avantgarde artists, typography has turned into something that could be looked at, in addition to being something to be read.
