Hamlet’s tragedy, which began with Claudius’s, Hamlet’s uncle, killing Hamlet’s father and marrying with his mother Getrude, is one of the most well-known plays of William Shakespeare. Ophelia, one of the most important characters in the play, was portrayed at various times by many painters. The earliest pictured Ophelia chart belongs to John Bell (1775-76). After Bell, many painters such as Millais, Piloty, Hughes, Dicksee, Waterhouse worked female character Ophelia in the paintings. However, perhaps the most popular Ophelia compositions appeared during the Victorian period. This study focuses on the texts and fashion versions of the Ophelia figure depicted in the illustrations of John Everett Millais (1852), Arthur Hughes (1865) and John William Waterhouse (1894). This study aims to investigate the theater and fashion interaction through Millais, Hughes and Waterhouse s Ophelia paintings, and show how the Victorian style has changed in the historical process, how the connection between play and costume has been strengthened and the importance of the costumes’ meaning on the audience/reader.
