The Barriers to the Labor Force Participation of Women in Turkey and Solution Suggestions: An Empirical Application

The aim of this study is to draw attention to the general overview of women employment in Turkey, its main characteristics and its differences compared to the oth-er countries. Furthermore, this study aims to present the barriers to the labor force par-ticipation of women and solution suggestions both theoretically and empirically. To this end, the labor force participation of women has been estimated using the Household Budget Surveys for the period of 2002-2008 via a standard probit model, and the results have been found consistent with the barriers presented theoretically. According to the main findings, education, marital status, economic resources, gender perception in so-ciety, and the location of residence are the most important factors affecting the labor force participation of women. Among these factors, education has been found the major factor for the labor force participation especially for women living in the urban areas.
