A total of 26 poems in those textbooks have been analyzed under the titles of theme, message, creation of sensitivity to life, reflection of vocabulary, language and expression considering the developmental stages of children. While identifying these criteria’s, the researcher reviewed the literature and set out from the need for a methodology of tackling the poems’ appropriateness to children and the evaluation has been made according to these criteria’s. Supported by quantitative data, the appropriateness of the poems to children was presented as suggested by the findings. In the light of the findings, it has been concluded that the poems in those textbooks were partially appropriate to children and that the principle of reality of children was not quite taken into consideration.
