  • Abstract
Kiwi, homeland of which is China, has recently started to be produced in our country and kiwi gardens started to be formed after 1987. Black Sea, Marmara and Aegean Regions were determined to be the primary cultivation areas. Especially Eastern Black Sea Region is the most important cultivation area in terms of climate and soil properties and this area contains the 37.3% of kiwi agricultural areas in our country. In Eastern Black Sea Region, highest quantity of kiwi gardens and highest amount of kiwi production is in the city of Rize. In Rize, first kiwi gardens started to be established with government incentive after 1990’s. As of 2014, kiwi cultivation is being performed in 3662 da area and Rize is the second important city in our country in this field. Almost all kiwi gardens in the city are in the same area with the tea gardens and policultural cultivation is being performed. It is interesting that 84.4% of the kiwi production is made in the Eastern districts of the city. In this study; the cultivation area distribution, reason of this distribution, problems faced in production and solution suggestions, regarding kiwi which was considered as an alternative product to tea but was determined to be a supportive product; were emphasized. For this purpose, interviews were made with kiwi producers in districts, cooperative presidents, people in charge in district directorate of agriculture and chamber of agriculture presidents. Provincial directorate of agriculture and Turkish Statistical Institute data were used; and the study was prepared by taking advantage of the literature related with the subject. The yield per unit being low, kiwi maintenance not being performed sufficiently, lacking of marketing and cold storage depots and kiwi unions not being functional draw attention for being some of the faced problems.
