Abstract
Evliya Celebi, who lived in the seventeen century, was a great traveller who visited most parts of Ottoman geography and wrote what he saw, read, and heard with a special style of his own and collected these writings in his work entitled as Seyahatname. The year 2011 has been declared as “Çelebi Years” by UNESCO thanks to the 400th anniversary of his birthday. In this study, we have studied and compiled the information that Evliya Çelebi has given about Edirne which is the previous capital city of the Ottomans before İstanbul. Evliya Çelebi visited Edirne at 1653 and gave broad information about Edirne in Seyahatname’ spending 46 pages to describe the city. The aim of this study is to compile and edit information about Edirne that has been given by Evliya Çelebi, under the Urban Geography principles. In the study, we have a short review about Evliya Çelebi and his Seyahatnames. Also we gave information about the history of Edirne, castles of Edirne and topographic features of city besides mosques, bazaars, neighborhoods, palaces, and other architectural structure’ with social and cultural features.
