Abstract
The climate and topographic conditions of Gümüşhane have had a huge effect on the population distribution. People have a tendency to migrate from regions where the standard of living deteriorates due to the adverse effects of natural conditions to places where the standard of living is better. This brings migration from rural areas to city centers or migrating outside the district with it. So, as the decrease in population also reduces the number of children attending school, migration also causes schools in rural areas to close down. The public that remain in the region where schools have closed down due to the decrease in students have turned to mobile teaching or overcome this issue with the help of student dormitories in city centers. The population of Gümüşhane, a location where natural life conditions create difficulties for people, also see migrating to big cities as a way out to find better jobs providing they complete their education first. These conditions have been the trigger behind the rapid change in the number of schools, teachers, and students between districts. The number of students, teachers, and schools has increased in areas where the population is higher. Therefore, the number of schools closed down due to the decrease in the number of students is lower in areas of Gümüşhane where the natural conditions are better and the level of migration is lower.
