CHANGING URBAN POLICIES AND URBAN REGENERATION: EXAMPLE OF GAZIANTEP NURIPAZARBAŞI NEIGHBORHOOD

In this study, urban regeneration works are discussed. The study area is Çamlıca Houses located in Gaziantep Nuripazarbaşı neighborhood. The aim of the study is to find out societal and spatial expectations and satisfaction of the residents regarding urban regeneration. The study consists of two main parts. In the first part, changing urban policies are discussed in particular relation with urban transformation practices in Turkey and Gaziantep. The second part of the study consists of field data. In this scope, questionnaires and interviews were given to 420 participants, who live in Çamlıca Houses in Nuripazarbaşı. On the data obtained here, exploratory factor analysis was performed in order to identify the factors related to urban regeneration. As a result, 5 factors were found in the scale developed for urban regeneration. In this study, it was found out that the residents in the study area have in common with those living in squatter settlements in terms of social classes and their average household income level is equal to or below the minimum wage. Apart from that, most of the participants stated that they do not feel comfortable about the surrounding squatter settlements and they regarded those places as dwellings in need of regeneration. In the light of the findings, our substantial recommendation is that in situ transformation should be encouraged in the case of urban regeneration in not only Gaziantep but also other parts of Turkey where applicable. In this way, the cultural tissues of the neighborhoods can be preserved and spatial segregation can be prevented.
