Abstract
The effects of process parameters such as roasting temperature and time, particle size, liquid/solid ratio, K2S2O8 concentration, leaching temperature, leaching time and stirring speed of extraction yields of cobalt (Co) and nickel (Ni) metals from the spent hydrodesulfurization catalyst the presence of potassium persulfate (K2S2O8) were investigated in this study. The experimental data indicate that the roasting temperature and time, leaching temperature and time are highly effective on the dissolution yields of both metals. The maximum dissolution rates of Co (98.05%) and Ni (96.63%) were reached under optimum leaching conditions; roasting temperature, 600°C; roasting time, 120 min; particle size, +75-30 μm; liquid/solid ratio, 12.5 ml/g; K2S2O8 concentration, 0.4 M; leaching temperature, 50°C; leaching time, 60 min and stirring speed, 400 r/min. Kinetic results show that the dissolution reactions of Co and Ni metals are controlled by the liquid film diffusion mechanism. Activation energy values (Ea) of Co and Ni metals were found as 9.85 kJ/mol and 12.24 kJ/mol, respectively. As a result, the results show that K2S2O8 compound can be used as a leaching agent in extraction of Co and Ni metals.
