SECONDARY SCHOOL MATHEMATICS TEACHERS’ VIEWS ON THE USE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES IN MATHEMATICS TEACHING

This study was carried out with the case study model, one of qualitative research designs, in order to examine the views of secondary school mathematics teachers on the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The participants of the study were184 mathematics teachers who joined the research voluntarily. The data of the study was collected with the help of a form consisting of eight open ended questions. The data obtained was analyzed by the content analysis method. At the end of the study, it was determined that the majority of the participants think that it is necessary to use ICT in mathematics teaching. Participants indicated that the most important benefits of the use of ICT are the concretization of mathematical concepts, enabling active participation, facilitating learning, providing permanent learning, facilitating solutions for questions and making the lesson fun. However, as the disadvantage of using ICT, participants stated that it was distracting attention, encouraging taking the easy way out, the students not taking notes, deadening the communication and drawing skills in class. It was determined that the participants did not use technology ICT as they preferred traditional teaching methods, they were lack of equipment and there was lack of technical staff. As a result of the study, it was found that very few of the participants used the software related to their field, and these softwares were only for dynamic geometry. It was determined that 15% of the participants used the interactive whiteboards only to reflect the questions in the books.
