Abstract
In this study, the cognitive and metacognitive strategies used by high school students in solving multiple choice questions related to Newton s laws of motion were examined by taking into consideration the metacognitive awareness and conceptual understanding levels of the students. The case study method on the qualitative research designs. Data of seven people were used in the study. Firstly, the conceptual understanding level of the students was determined by using the criterion sampling method in the selection of students. With the data obtained, students were grouped according to their level of conceptual understanding and metacognitive awareness. The questions selected from the Basic Mechanical Test were solved and semi-structured interviews were conducted for the solution process by using voice thinking technique. As a result of the research, it was found that students metacognitive awareness and conceptual comprehension levels affect the cognitive and metacognitive strategies used, and students with low level of conceptual comprehension used more and metacognitive strategies in the reading stage, while higher and metacognitive strategies were used in the solution stage.
