  • Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of attitudes of science teacher candidates towards STEM fields on STEM teaching perspective, self-confidence and intention. The sample of this study was randomly selected from 489 third and fourth grade students studying in the science education department of state universities in the Aegean Region in the spring semester of 2018- 2019. In this study, attitudes towards STEM fields and attitude scales for STEM teaching were used to collect data (Keleş, Kiremit and Aktamış, 2017). In order to determine how pre-service teachers attitudes towards STEM fields affect their attitudes towards STEM teaching, LISREL 8.30 (Jöreskog and Sörbom, 2006) was used with SIMPLIS command language and path analysis was performed by using the maximum likelihood method. Results of the analysis, indicates that self-confidence attitudes towards STEM teaching had a direct positive relationship with attitudes towards science, attitudes towards technology, attitudes towards mathematics and attitudes towards engineering. The perspective towards STEM teaching was found to be directly related to attitudes towards science and attitude towards mathematics. It was concluded that the intention of STEM teaching was directly related to the self-confidence attitude towards STEM education and the perspective towards STEM teaching. It was concluded that intention of STEM teaching was positively and indirectly related to attitudes towards science, attitudes towards technology, attitudes towards mathematics and attitudes towards engineering. Successful implementation of STEM education within the classroom also depends on teachers affective status towards these areas. Therefore, it is important to conduct research to improve intention to STEM teaching.
