Abstract
The main purpose of this study is to determine the status of the classification of living things in fifth grade students. Mixed method was used in the research. The structured interview was used in the qualitative dimension of the research and the screening model was used in the quantitative dimension. A total of 57 students from 5th grade students participated in the study in a public school in the Eastern Anatolia Region in the 2018-2019 academic years with purposive sampling method. Qualitative data were collected through a fully structured interview form. The puzzle form was used to collect the quantitative data. The data of the measurement tools used in the study were analyzed with the help of Microsoft Excel program. Descriptive analysis and frequency and percentage techniques were used. According to the interpretation of the findings; According to the quantitative data, although the participants were found to be good at the classification of living things, this situation is not supported by qualitative data. According to the qualitative data, it was determined that almost half of the participants had complete and accurate information about the classification. In addition, a significant portion of the participants were found to be in error. The most obvious error was found to be the confusion of the classification of living things and the classification of animals. It was determined that the participants classified the living things in their environment in different ways such as vertebrate and invertebrate and the living things around me, they indicated a little by drawing pictures and experienced misconceptions in their classification. The most evident error is that living things like Crab, Anchovy, Scorpion, Carp and Horse mackerel are displayed in the invertebrate class. Although the living creatures in the country-wide environment differ, it should be noted that the examples used in the classification are from the student s immediate surroundings.
