  • Abstract
Solid wastes are among the most important environmental problems. Because population growth, urbanization, industrialization, developing technology, increasing welfare level and changing consumption habits cause the solid wastes to increase day by day. As a matter of fact, although different solutions have been proposed for this problem in various years, it is seen that these solutions are not effective enough. In order for the solutions to be successful, it is necessary to make them widespread, it should be developed, local governments and the people should continue their activities together. Otherwise, we will be faced with more and more solid wastes every day and the pressure of these wastes on the environment will continue to increase. What we will do, how we will dispose of these wastes, where we will leave them, how we will evaluate them or environmental damage as a result of evaluation always appear as questions that are in consultation. Therefore in this study, solid waste situation in Turkey and Kocaeli, per capita amount, together with the state of disposal facilities, it is aimed to show how solid wastes can be reduced and evaluated in the example of İZAYDAŞ (İzmit Waste Incineration and Storage Corporation, Kocaeli). The data of the study consists of TÜİK data, information obtained as a result of field studies (İZAYDAŞ), İZAYDAŞ activity reports, the amount of solid waste coming to İZAYDAŞ and the amount of incinerated waste (1996-2017), and Kocaeli environmental status reports. From collected data and information are created tables, graphs and maps and comparisons and interpretations are made according to years. As a result, it is determined that the amount of solid waste collected by municipalities in Turkey between 2001-2018 varies by region. The largest proportion of solid waste collected in 2018 in Turkey, Istanbul and its surroundings and the Marmara region constitute. The amount of municipal waste collected in both Turkey and Kocaeli increased between 2001-2018. Although the amount of solid waste per capita in Turkey varies by region, just like the amount of waste collected, in 2018, 1.2 kg of waste per person per day fell in Turkey. In Kocaeli, it is found that 1 kg of waste per person per day falls. Compared to this ratio, it is seen that the amount per capita in Kocaeli remains below the Turkish average. When we look at waste disposal methods in both Turkey and Kocaeli, it is determined that the land fill method is more preferred as we approach the present day. At the same time, Kocaeli province has one of the important facilities in Turkey (Turkey s first solid waste disposal facility IZAYDAŞ) in terms of waste disposal, reduction and evaluation. Between 2006 and 2018, the amount of domestic waste coming to Izaydaş has steadily increased, and in 2018, there is more than 600 tons of domestic waste. It is determined that the amount of waste burned at this facility reached 24,000 tons in 2018. Energy is produced from garbageg as in this facility, which has many functions. Energy production from waste shows differences in Izaydaş by year. It is determined that the amount of energy produced in 2018 exceeds 15,000.00 W.
