Abstract
Based on their magnetic properties and on inference or direct measurement of their local atomic order compared to related crystalline compounds, metallic glasses can be classified as type I (nearly crystalline) or II (non-crystalline). Preliminary results of a search for strongly magnetic quasicrystals in alloy systems showing type II glass formation are briefly described. Melt spun Co3.9 Er shows magnetization and Curie temperature between those of crystalline Co7 Er2 and amorphous Co3.44 Er films. It´s X-ray diffraction pattern shows-several sharp peaks which are best indexed with an icosahedral structure.
